To his credit, Duterte did manage to lower the tensions in the security sphere. Still, it is truly quite another to set aside the sovereign and territorial integrity of the Philippines in exchange for infrastructure projects. Now, whether or not Marcos will continue this tit-for-tat strategy remains to be seen... Marcos announced that he would assert the Philippines’ maritime territorial rights and that he would not compromise the country’s “sacred” sovereignty.
